Ginger planting starts in late March through April, and harvest begins in December and continues through April each year.
Ginger is the common name for Zingiber officinale. It is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Liliopsida, order Zingiberales, and family Zingiberaceae. The Zingiberaceae family consists of tropical and subtropical perennial herbs, mainly from Indomalaysia.
The harvestable portion of the ginger plant is the rhizome of the plant, meaning it grows underground and is often referred to as ginger root. Ginger cultivation began in ancient times in Southeast Asia, but has since spread around the world thanks to its numerous uses and health benefits. Today, ginger is farmed commercially for many purposes, most commonly, cooking, juicing, and medicinal uses.
Ginger is usually very potent, and typically known as a hot, fragrant kitchen spice. We only grow Organic Hawaiian Yellow Ginger, which is a Japanese variety that tends to be more pungent and flavorful than other varieties. Ginger is a staple in many Indian and Asian dishes, and is used commonly in sauces, dressings, marinades, and to flavor meat or vegetarian dishes. It is very versatile and can be found pickled on most sushi plates or candied as a sweet and spicy treat. Ginger also shows up in cookies, crackers, cakes, and breads.
Ginger has been used for centuries to spice coffee or tea, and has also been used to make ginger wine, beer, ale, and even ginger-flavored liqueur. Today it shows up in many smoothies and fresh juices, amplifying flavors and adding a slight spice depending on the amount of ginger used. We have turned our fresh organic ginger into frozen puree, which is available year-round and ideal for manufacturers producing beverages, salad dressings, frozen entrees and more.
The aromatic oils of the ginger plant are used in making condiments, perfumes and medicines, commonly used to treat stomach distress. Ginger can be easily dried for preservation or used for medicinal purposes. Ginger has been used medicinally for centuries in many cultures, and recent studies have supported the healing properties of ginger. It has been shown to help ease muscle pain associated with exercise and used to help a variety of ailments including: reducing inflammation and treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy. Traditional remedies use ginger to treat the flu, common cold, headache, fatigue, sore throat, stomach aches, cramps, and arthritis.
